Developing Tools to Support Special Education in Gen-Ed Classrooms for Children with Dyslexia and Dyscalculia

Overview:

Research shows that 8-10% of American children under  the age of 18 have some type of learning disability. According to the US Census Bureau 1 in 5 individuals in the US have learning and attention issues and 4 million children under the age of 18 have learning disabilities out of which 2.8 million are actively getting services involving special education. However, there is a shortage of trained professionals to support the needs of all the children with learning disabilities especially in the public school system. Just 17% of general education teachers feel “very well prepared” to teach children with issues like ADHD and dyslexia. And unfortunately, there is a shortage of licensed special education teachers in the US.

Keeping the above limitations in mind,I was able to develop a web application that mimics the learning and teaching techniques used by special education teachers in gen-ed classrooms to help students with dyslexia and dyscalculia work with numbers and solve mathematical problems.

I created the web application using HTML, CSS and Javascript.

The project is a web application that mimics the teaching techniques used by special education instructors to teach children with dyslexia and dyscalculia in gen-ed classrooms.
